Alternating ferro and antiferromagnetic interactions are mediated by alternating end-on and end to-end azido bridges, respectively, in a novel manganese azido complex (Mn-m1,3-N3-m1,1-N3)2L 1 (L = 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one azine), which is constructed by using the bis(bidentate) Schiff base ligand 4,5-diazafluoren-9-one azine as the long link and the infinite Mn-m1,3-N3-m1,1-N3 chain as the secondary building unit (SBU). The compound has an interesting framework of threefold interpenetrating (10, 3) nets, as shown in the Figure 1.

Figure 1: a) Infinite Mn–azido SBU linked bybis(biden tate) ligands L (4,5-diazafluoren-9-one azine). b) A 3D network in 1 along the [101] direction. For clarity, the long link represents the Schiff base ligand L. c) Projection of 1 along the [101] direction showing three parallel interpenetrating 3D (10,3) network based on the topologyof Mn ××× Mn connections. The short, medium, and long links represent the double EO azido, double EE azido, and bis(bidentate) Schiff base ligand L, respectively .
